Name: Destiny Muhammad Quartet // Freedom Jazz Choir
Date: June 18, 2022
Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM PDT
Event Description:
Healdsburg Jazz 2022 Artist in Residence harpist and composer Destiny Muhammad performs Textures Colors Tones: Sketches in Jazz. Inspired by Rosie Lee Tompkins is a program dedicated to the legacy of the late Richmond, CA, based African-American improvisational quilt maker and fabric artist. A colorful commissioning of music composed by harpist Destiny Muhammad with poetic narration by former San Francisco poet laureate devorah major and Enid Pickett. Featured with Destiny Muhammad will be the former Healdsburg Jazz 2021 Artist in residence Tammy L. Hall (piano), Arturo “Chico” López (upright bass), and Leon Joyce Jr (drum & percussion). Since 2013 the Healdsburg Jazz community Freedom Jazz Choir has been a Summer Festival favorite. Cancelled in 2020, virtual in 2021, and live again this year, the 40+ Choir is thrilled to perform a program titled "Songs for my Father", an exciting set of original arrangements by Tiffany Austin celebrating Father’s Day, the ancestors, and the diverse range of music from gospel to jazz to blues to R&B to spirituals to African folk songs. The Choir is under the musical direction of Tiffany Austin, and will feature the choir pianist Gaea Schell, with Leon Joyce (drums), and Howard Wiley (tenor saxophone), a top-notch music accompaniment for our beloved choir.
